Montgomery Elementary School in Montgomery Township celebrated a major milestone last week, marking its 60th anniversary with a spirited, 1960s-themed celebration.
Students gathered March 23 at the school at 1221 Stump Road for an afternoon assembly that blended nostalgia, school pride and a look toward the future.
Dressed in tie-dye, bell bottoms and peace signs, students embraced the “groovy” theme as they took part in the festivities.
The celebration kicked off at 2:45 p.m. with a video presentation highlighting the school’s history since opening in 1966. The event also featured a symbolic birthday candle lighting, followed by a dance party and confetti celebration to mark the occasion.
As part of the anniversary, students also revisited the school’s past through a special look inside a time capsule placed during renovations nearly a decade ago.
The capsule, tied to the school’s 2016 building project, gave students a glimpse into earlier generations of Montgomery Elementary.
Items unearthed last week included a copy of the program from the school’s original dedication and a program from the 2017 dedication, a photo of the school’s new mountain lion mural, a stuffed mountain lion, a school T-shirt, the lyrics to the school song, a copy of the Dec. 11, 2017 "The Reporter" newspaper and a photograph of the school’s then staff.
According to a 2017 article, there was a previous time capsule made at the school in the 1980s following renovations, but it had not been located at the time.
To continue the tradition, students created a new “video time capsule,” preserving present-day memories and experiences for future students to discover.
Montgomery Elementary has grown alongside the surrounding community over the past six decades, with major additions completed in 1989 and again in 2016. Today, the school serves more than 630 students in kindergarten through sixth grade.
Prior to Montgomery Elementary, and the consolidation of North Penn elementary schools when the district was created in the 1960s, Montgomery Township was served by the Montgomeryville Consolidated School from the early 1920s until the early 1960s.
The historic school was demolished to make way for a car wash.
The anniversary celebration highlighted both the school’s history and its continued role in the North Penn community, offering students a chance to reflect on the past while leaving their own mark for the future.
