Supervisors said they are waiting on guidance from PennDOT

At Monday’s Montgomery Township Board of Supervisors meeting, a resident of Cove Circle voiced frustration over the lack of progress on traffic calming measures for Grays Lane, in the wake of the removal of the now-viral chicane delineators.

“It’s been five months since the chicane was removed, and you assured us that you would have something quickly,” resident George Schutte said. “We’re now coming up on almost half a year, especially with school starting. The danger in that area is just getting worse. You have school kids out now morning and night. The speeding is still a problem.”

Board Chair Audrey Ware-Jones said she reached out to Manager Carolyn McCreary for an update and was told the township is still waiting on guidance from PennDOT, which oversees the Traffic Assistance Program (TAPS).

The program provides free studies and recommendations, but the timeline is outside township control, Ware-Jones said.

Township Police Chief William Peoples said that the TAPS program is free and municipalities are at its mercy, as far as timeline.

“This one’s a little bit more involved than the one we had at Country Club and Pinecrest that came back quicker,” Peoples said. “Unfortunately, you’re at their mercy as to how fast they can get it done.”

While the township waits, police have continued enforcement. Peoples said, in September alone, officers conducted eight separate traffic enforcement operations on Grays Lane.

Additional white speed lines have been painted at Tree Line Drive, Pioneer Drive, and Bellows Way to help measure vehicle speed, since Peoples said local police cannot use radar.

“I spoke to Officer Jenkins, our Highway Safety Officer, and he called them again and left a message, and we will follow up again this week because it has been some time,” Peoples said.
