Police and fire crews responded late Tuesday morning to a hazardous materials call outside the Walmart at The Shops of Harleysville in Lower Salford Township, after a suspicious bag was discovered in the landscaping of the shopping center.

According to Montgomery County emergency dispatch, the bag had writing on it in black marker, warning that it was a fumigator and that “the product will kill you,” along with drawings of skulls and crossbones.

The item was reported at 10:48 a.m. at the shopping center at 651 Main Street (Sumneytown Pike), near Old Sumneytown Pike and Sturgis Road.

Lower Salford Police were joined at the scene by Montgomery County Hazardous Materials Response Team, Harleysville Fire Company, Upper Salford Fire Company and  Harleysville Area Emergency Medical Services. A caller who spotted the bag directed officers to the location, dispatch notes indicated.

As of 11:37 a.m., the scene was cleared without incident.

This report will be updated with further details from police and fire once received.

Editor's Note: This story was corrected to remove Towamencin Vol. Fire Co. and VMSC EMS as responding units.
