With the clock nearly expired at Crawford Stadium, Souderton sophomore Megan Borro delivered a moment to remember.
Her shot from beyond the 18-yard box with five seconds remaining found the back of the net, breaking a scoreless deadlock and securing the Indians a 1-0 victory over host North Penn in Tuesday’s SOL Colonial Division matchup, according to The Mercury.
“I had to make it in because my team was counting on me,” Borro told Mike Cabrey of The Reporter. “I knew I had to shoot it with the little time left.”
The tally marked Borro’s first varsity goal, a fitting reward for her tireless two-way effort as a defensive midfielder, per the report.
Souderton (5-2, 2-2 division) nearly grabbed the lead earlier in the second half when Sienna Stunkard appeared to slot home a chance, but the officials ruled no goal.
Instead of losing focus, the Indians kept pressing until Borro’s last-gasp strike sealed the points.
“She was box-to-box all game and really deserved that,” coach Melissa Lollar told The Mercury. “If she gets behind the ball, I’m confident it’s going to be a dangerous shot.”
North Penn (3-2-1, 0-2-1) had its best looks in the first half, with freshman Lani Bachmann twice striking the crossbar, according to the gameplay report. Knights coach Mike Rio praised his team’s effort despite the heartbreaking ending.
“It was a great shot to end it, but I’m really proud of how hard the girls played,” he told The Reporter.
The loss leaves North Penn still searching for its first divisional win, while Souderton moved into the top 10 of the District 1-4A rankings, according to The Mercury. Both squads return to action Thursday — the Knights visiting Central Bucks East and the Indians hosting Central Bucks South.
