Could Bingo Help Combat Pennsylvania's Loneliness?

The digital world is an exciting one, and it thrives on connections and social media. Yet this can itself create isolation, and life from behind a screen is extremely lonely. Pennsylvania has high levels of loneliness, but a comment by one of the UK's leading bingo experts suggests the game could be a way to combat this.

The Social Aspect of Bingo

Miles Baron, who is the chief executive of The Bingo Association in the United Kingdom, has stated that “The main reason people come to play is to win money, but the second biggest - not by much - is to meet with people, family and friends.”

These comments were also backed up by Dominic Mansour, who operates one of the UK’s largest bingo chains. He spoke to the United Kingdom’s Mirror newspaper, explaining, “Bingo has always been about more than numbers on a card - it builds community and connection and provides a safe place to socialize.” A survey by his company revealed that 48% of players were lonely before coming along to the game, with nearly two-thirds saying they left feeling less so, and “better connected” after attending.

A bingo game is extremely easy to partake in. There are games that can be played online, so people can get used to the feel and mechanics of a game. They can then transfer this to bingo halls. Many now have electronic screens similar to the interfaces found on phone apps and browsers. This means UK residents can seamlessly change from online outlets to physical games played with new friends in halls.

Social Isolation in Pennsylvania

A recent study into loneliness in the US found that one of the state's biggest cities is its loneliest. It took census bureau data into account, along with other factors like the monthly gross rent, and determined that Pittsburgh is the loneliest city in Pennsylvania. However, it did base this solely on those living alone and found that of the city's 300,000 inhabitants, 34.5% were single inhabitants. This made it the sixth-loneliest city in the United States.

A closer look can be gained from the United Health Foundation's rankings. It places Pennsylvania 33rd in all states for those at risk of social isolation in the 65 and over age category. This gives the older generation a 31.8% chance of being socially isolated, which is strong in comparison to many other states, many of which ranked close to 40%.

Bingo in Pennsylvania

There are plenty of places in Pennsylvania where you can access bingo. They all perform in unique ways and have different people going there. This means you can always find one to suit your needs, be it Veterans bingo games or walk-in, sociable halls.

By no means is bingo a cure for loneliness. However, it can help you make new friends and acquaintances, which is in part a step in the right direction. It is also fantastic fun, and giving it a go can help you make connections in the wider North Penn community.
