Neighbors responded en masse at two community donation drives on Saturday in Towamencin Township, so much so that enough was collected to donate to Manna on Main Street, Shepherd’s Shelf, the new temporary housing shelter in Lansdale, and both Perkiomenville and Conshohocken SPCAs.

The gathering’s initial purpose was to benefit two local causes — the new temporary housing shelter in Lansdale and the Shepherd’s Shelf food pantry at Christ Lutheran Church in Towamencin, which is collecting pet food and supplies.

Organizers encouraged attendees to bring new linens, towels, and kitchen items for the shelter, along with bags or cans of dog and cat food, treats, and litter for Shepherd’s Shelf.

“We collected more than enough for the number of residents they will have there,” said co-organizer Jenn Foster. “We collected enough pet food to distribute to Manna, Shepherd's Shelf and both the Conshohocken and Perkiomenville SPCA. Some folks were bringing items in with carts. It was incredible.”

Foster estimated close to 500 pounds of pet food and treats were donated for the SPCA. One donor arrived with 10 Chewy-brand boxes full of cat food cans, she said.

“We collected cat and kitten food, dog and puppy food, some cat litter, lots of treats, and even a few toys. The plan was to take it all to Shepherd's Shelf, but with such an amazing turnout, we wanted to spread it out some. The SPCA relies on donations and they have seen an influx of animal surrenders,” Foster said. “I'm always overwhelmed with how generous our community is.”

Another drive is being planned for early December.
