North Penn High School’s softball team edged out Council Rock South in a tightly contested PIAA District 1 Class 6A semifinal game, winning 1-0.
According to The Reporter, despite both teams already securing spots in the upcoming state tournament, they played with intensity, reminiscent of their previous year’s state final that also ended with a 1-0 North Penn victory.
This win advances North Penn to the district championship game against Owen J. Roberts, while Council Rock South will face Perkiomen Valley in a third-place match, per the report.
Pitching dominated the game, with Council Rock South’s Lexi Waring allowing seven hits and striking out six. North Penn’s Felicia Connolly was equally impressive, delivering a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts—the most Rock South has faced this season, according to the article.
Connolly’s performance was crucial, particularly as she had missed a portion of the season due to injury, which had impacted the Knights’ overall record.
The decisive run came in the top of the seventh inning when Alana Drummond hit a home run over the right-center field fence, according to game coverage. While this was the only run of the game, both teams had multiple opportunities to score.
Council Rock South loaded the bases in the third inning but was unable to convert, while North Penn was thwarted by Rock South’s defense in the third and fifth innings.
Unfortunately, the game was marred by a collision between Council Rock South’s Molly Gabriele and Victoria Houck in the outfield. Gabriele, who has been a key player for her team all season, suffered a concussion and a tongue injury and will be out for the remainder of the season.
