More than 1,800 elementary students in the North Penn School District are gearing up for the Annual IronKnights Elementary Triathlon on Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m. at North Penn High School at 1340 Valley Forge Road in Towamencin.
The rain date for this event is Sunday, however event organizers said Friday afternoon the event will go on as usual.
The IronKnights Triathlon is one of the largest youth triathlons in the United States.
Students in kindergarten through sixth grade will compete in a three-part competition ranging in distances according to grade level which include biking, running and swimming. Students in kindergarten through second grade will swim 20 yards, bike one mile and run a half-mile. Third and fourth graders will swim 60 yards, bike three miles and run three-quarters of a mile. Students in grades five and six will swim 100 yards, bike five miles and run one full mile!
With the help of elementary school physical education teachers from throughout the district as well as the IRONKnights Parent Support Group (IPSG), Jason Theodore, physical education teacher at Montgomery Elementary, worked very hard in putting together such a great event to promote health, wellness and hard work for elementary school students. Participants were provided opportunities to train for the event, including swimming practice sessions.
