With the first one taking place Thursday evening, a Try It Ride is a free, one-day event hosted by local Pennsylvania Interscholastic Cycling League teams across the state
North Penn MTB, with support of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Cycling League (PICL), will join several other area teams in hosting the very first "Try-It" Ride within North Penn this Thursday evening at Parkside Place Park!
Have you ever wondered what it feels like to ride single track trails, surrounded by nature, with a group of supportive, energetic young riders? That’s exactly the kind of adventure a PICL Try It Ride offers. Designed for current 5th through 11th grade students curious about mountain biking, these events provide a welcoming, no-pressure introduction to the sport and the PICL community.
What Is a Try It Ride?
A Try It Ride is a free, one-day event hosted by local PICL teams across the state. It gives new riders – often those with little or no mountain biking experience – the chance to test out the sport in a safe, inclusive, and fun environment. There’s no obligation to join a team or own a high-end bike – loaner bikes and helmets are available for those who need them. The goal is simple: to get more kids on bikes, regardless of their background or skill level.
What to Expect
Participants start with a quick bike and helmet fit, followed by basic skills instruction. Coaches – all trained and background-checked – guide small groups through fundamental techniques like body positioning, braking, and cornering. Then comes the highlight: a short group ride on a PICL-supplied obstacle course, tailored to beginners and filled with encouragement and high-fives.
Try It Rides typically last 1.5 to 2 hours, including plenty of water breaks and time to connect with peers and coaches. Parents are welcome to observe, ask questions, or even ride along.
More Than Just Riding
North Penn MTB is one of several PICL teams supported by More Kids on Bikes (MKOB), a Phoenixville-based non-profit organization. What sets these teams apart is their focus on character building, teamwork, and community. While racing is an option for those interested, the core mission is to help kids grow through cycling — physically, emotionally, and socially.
“After my daughter tried it, she was hooked,” said Tara, a coach and parent from North Penn MTB. “But more importantly, she found a community that supports her, on and off the bike.”
