Five barriers that prevent children from reading books

  • News from our partners

The results of last year's study showed that only 16% of schoolchildren resort to such daily reading. Moreover, a fairly large percentage of readers indicated that adults force them to read either paper books or online in the Zlibrary. Here are 5 barriers that prevent children from reading books and how to fix them.

Adults on the phone

If parents spend the whole evening scrolling on the phone, then you should not expect that the child will sit down to read at this time. Even if adults have bought the most interesting book novelties for children, the child's reading begins on the parents' lap.

A useful exercise to counteract this is the task of writing down everything we read during the day. An analysis of what we read during the day will tell you which reading is essential for you, necessary for work or pleasure, and which is a simple time-eater that can be used for daily reading with your child.

Parents' pursuit of pages read

Reading is not a race or a record. There is no point in measuring books by the number of pages read. It is a savoring of the text, words, and images, examining, discussing, reflecting on what has been read. And all this is best developed through short stories. The path to the pleasure of reading lies through picture books.

Read slowly and discuss everything with your child: the cover of the book, its endpapers, every little thing in the illustration. Try reading the dialogues in turn or in different voices. Ask your child for her opinion, feelings, and predictions about what might happen next. In an evening, you will read one book, where the text will be very short, but you will lay the foundation for your child's conscious reading.

The biological and reading ages of the child do not coincide

Sometimes parents buy books for their children that are too difficult to understand. Then an insurmountable barrier grows between the child and the book: she cannot comprehend the text, its complexity and the length of the sentences and gives up reading.

It is best to find books that match the child's reading age in terms of both the complexity of the text and the subject matter and interests. If that doesn't work, you can read two books at the same time. Your child will read one to you: these should be books that are "up to your ability" - not too simple, but not too difficult for their level. You will read a book to your child that they like in terms of the topic and that matches their hobbies and biological age. In this way, you will simultaneously raise their reading level and fuel their interest in reading.

Not interesting!

It is worth choosing a visual image that will symbolize the reader's journey. The task is this: recall the books of your childhood that you remember and that influenced you. And then draw a river, mark these books on one bank, and opposite them - the events in your life when you read this book. As soon as you delve into your memories, unexpected details will emerge: the place where you loved to read, the sounds you heard, maybe even the smells of your childhood. This exercise is very therapeutic. Be sure to involve your children in creating your river: this way, you will show them how you gradually became a reader.

Harmful stereotypes about reading

Adults are often carriers of very harmful and destructive stereotypes about reading. For example, “finish the book you started”, “don’t read several books at the same time”, and “read the classics, because everything else is not literature!” Reading is a space of freedom, pleasure, and knowledge.

French writer and literature teacher Daniel Pennac wrote an entire book about the rights of the reader. They say that you can not read or not finish a book, the reader has the right to read and reread anything, anywhere and out loud.
