The Telford Borough Council Monday, March 10 approved the advertisement of an ordinance to formalize multiple parking bans in the borough.

The ordinance establishes parking prohibitions on the north Side of Penn Avenue between South Third Street and Main Street and on the south side of Penn Avenue between Main Street and Station Alley. Both sections have long been de facto no parking zones, said council member Robert Sparks.

“We’re cleaning it up to match what’s already there,” said Sparks. “The north and south sides between Station Alley and Main Street were already no parking zones. It’s just extending the north side out to Third Street the way it’s been for years.”

The ordinance will be advertised for 60 days before being adopted by council.

Civil Service Commission Opt Out

Council approved a resolution calling on the Pennsylvania General Assembly to allow boroughs to opt out of the civil service process for police officers. State law requires boroughs with more than three police officers to establish a Civil Service Commission, which is responsible for administering the civil service exam to applicants.

Council president Emiline Weiss said that boroughs are struggling to hire police officers and argued that the exam is an unnecessary barrier to employment. The resolution will be presented at the Pennsylvania Borough’s Association convention in June.

Council received its annual update about the Indian Valley Character Counts coalition (IVCCC) from president Jeremy Miller. An initiative of the North Penn YMCA, the IVCCC was founded in 1997 to promote positive youth development through information, services and networking. In recent years, the organization has primarily focused on youth mental health issues and substance abuse, said Miller.

Miller previewed some of the organization’s upcoming events, including a “Parenting on Your Feet” crash course for parents of teenagers on March 20 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Indian Valley YMCA, and a Healthy Kids Day on April 11 at the YMCA.

Council also discussed some upcoming borough events, including an Education for an Indoor Gardening class on March 15 at the Indian Valley Public Library (IVPL), the launch of the IVPL’s new Celtic Cultural Club on March 22 at 2 p.m., the Easter Egg Hunt at Stover Park on April 12 at 10 a.m. and the annual So You Think You Can Cook cooking competition on April 2 at 6 p.m. at the Perseverance Fire Company.

Council member John Taylor added there are five remaining cooking spots for the cooking competition. To register as an amateur chef, visit https://sytycc.telfordhappenings.com/chef-application.

Council additionally rescinded the creation of the new Telford Borough Facebook page after deeming it no longer necessary and appointed former council member Spencer Kulhanjian and Daniel Fox to the Civil Service Commission. Their terms will expire on January 1, 2029.

The next Telford Borough Council meeting is on April 14 at 7:30 p.m. For more information, visit telfordborough.org
