League's leader thanks township for support of local ballplayers
The first official pitch is still a few weeks away, but Upper Gwynedd is getting ready to play ball.
Township officials honored the Nor Gwyn Baseball and Softball Association on Monday night, thanking the league and honoring two teams for providing hundreds of kids with places to play.
“On behalf of the entire organization, thank you for your incredible support of the Nor-Gwyn Baseball and Softball organization. Your commitment to our athletes, fields and programs has made a lasting impact in our community,” said Nor-Gwyn President Ed Hill.
“Nor Gwyn has over 40 rec baseball and softball, spring summer and fall teams, 10 tournament travel teams, baseball juniors, legion, and college (teams), that practice play a full schedule each year — that’s over 600 players ages four through 21,” said Hill
Based on Hancock Road near Gwyn-Nor Elementary and Pennbrook Middle School, the Nor-Gwyn league operates nine ballfields, seven practice batting cages, 10 turf bullpens, two snack stands, and five restrooms, Hill told the board. In recent years, the township has helped the league by adding foul ball safety nets, new fencing on three fields, and making plans to replace two light poles, much done with support from the township’s public works department and their backhoes, bucket trucks, stone deliveries, street signs, and more.
“We’re very proud of the environment in which our players play, and we hope that the township’s contributions give you the same sense of pride,” Hill said.
“Thank you for your support, and for believing in us. We hope to see you at opening day: Saturday, 10 a.m., April 5th,” Hill said.
Commissioner Greg Moll — sporting Nor Gwyn green and gold along with the four other commissioners — said he’s very familiar with the league thanks to his son and daughter’s time on their teams, and discussed the lessons they’ve learned.
“These kids got there, and had the success, because they have integrity, accountability, they show up and handle their business, on and off the field. That’s a big credit to the coaches, because they’re setting their kids up for success in life, not just in baseball and softball,” Moll said.
He then shouted out two teams in particular, the 2024 9U Nor-Gwyn Hawks boys baseball team and the 10U River Bandits softball squad, summarizing both of their seasons and naming each player.
The Hawks finished with a 35-12 record, “which is incredible,” Moll said, and finished runner up in the Ripken Districts, then advanced to the state finals, qualified for regionals, then finished runner-up but earned a trip to the World Series in Indiana, before returning to win the Pennridge Summer Slam tournament. From that ballclub, honored were players Anthony Clark, Carter Cho, Daulton Thomas, Dmitry Huff, George Dziedzic, Jacob Ackerman, Jonah Van Ooyen, Karter Stokes, Landon McNalley, Mason Atkiss, Sam Sherman, Schaefer Roberts, and Marco Kemper, along with coaches Andy Dziedzic, Tom Kemper, Dave Atkiss, Dan Cho, Mike Roberts, Kyle Sherman, and Scott Creider.
“Have a great season, good luck at rec, and good luck as 10U Hawks. I believe in you guys, and look forward to seeing what you have this season,” said Moll.
The softball River Bandits finished their season with a 13-0-1 record, competing in the 10u Bux-Mont Rec Softball League, then won a 19-team tournament at the end of the season, finishing with a 4-2 win over Harleysville in their championship game.
Honored were players Haley Goodwin, Amelia George, Olivia Mamrol, Charlotte Farabaugh, Reese Hammarquist, Ava Bechle, Reagan Darrah, Lizzie Buckland, Audrey Benemerito, Naomi Henry, and Keira Deutz, along with coaches Marty Henry, Phil Goodwin, Jason Farabaugh, and Jenn Henry.
“You guys were a formidable group of young ladies. You guys are amazing kids, and I mean that sincerely. I know a lot of you, and you guys embody everything that it means to be a Hawk,” Moll said. “Good luck, congratulations, and we’ll see you out there this summer.”
