Essential cybersecurity tips for everyday users

We’re more connected than ever before, with over 5.5 billion internet users worldwide and smartphone owners now the global majority. But for all the positives, every click brings risks from cybercriminals who are constantly finding new ways to exploit technological weaknesses.

Whether you're shopping online, checking emails or browsing social media, you might unknowingly expose yourself to dangers like identity theft and malware attacks. Cybersecurity isn’t reserved for IT professionals, and anyone who uses the internet should take proactive steps to protect themselves.

Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Understand common online threats

It helps to know what you’re up against. Phishing attacks, for example, trick you into revealing sensitive information by impersonating trusted organisations. These might come in the form of fake emails or messages that look legitimate but contain links leading to malicious websites.

Malware, on the other hand, is software designed to harm your devices or steal your data. It can be hidden in infected email attachments, shady downloads or compromised websites. By recognising these threats, you can start to avoid falling for them.

Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication (2FA)

Your passwords are the first line of defence against unauthorised access. Relying on simple, easy-to-guess logins is like leaving the door to your digital life open.

Create long, unique passwords for each account. Use a mix of upper- and lower-case letters, numbers and symbols. If you struggle to remember them all, use a password manager to generate and store them securely.

Additionally, enable 2FA whenever possible. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a code sent to your phone or email. Even if a hacker steals your password, they won’t be able to access your account without that second piece of information.

Protect your privacy on public networks

Public Wi-Fi networks like those in cafés or airports are convenient but pose a major security risk. Hackers can easily intercept data on these open networks, making it possible to steal your personal information.

To guard yourself, avoid accessing sensitive accounts such as online banking when connected. If you must use a public network, consider using a Virtual Private Network (VPN). A VPN service encrypts your internet traffic, making it unreadable to anyone trying to monitor your activities.

Update your software and devices

Keeping everything up to date is one of the easiest and most effective ways to fight cyber threats. Software developers regularly release updates that patch weaknesses that hackers could exploit. Whether it’s your operating system, browser or apps, always install updates as soon as they become available.

Many devices have automatic update settings to make this easier. Additionally, upgrading firmware on routers and other connected items strengthens your home network's security.

By following these simple foundational practices, you can heavily reduce the risk of falling victim to cybercrime. Stay aware, stay secure!
