Pennsylvania’s finest who inspired NBA stars

An excellent place to live, Pennsylvania is a state with so much to offer people. From its rich history to its diverse culture, it’s filled with selling points. Pennsylvania’s impact can be felt even in the sporting world, with some world-famous NBA stars from over the years calling it their home.


These days, with the NBA playoffs firmly underway and specific teams starting to emerge as absolute favorites to win the championship, many of these local players are seen as inspirational figures. As players aim to sink match-winning shots and become contenders for the regular season MVP as a result, some of these former greats have potentially inspired them along the way.


Many of Pennsylvania’s finest have contributed to the NBA’s remarkable product over the years, standing out numerous times and being adored by fans. Below, we remember some of them.


Kobe Bryant 


First up is a man who needs no introduction. Kobe Bryant was basketball royalty and remains so after his passing. If you ask the likes of Jayson Tatum and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander which basketball players have inspired them recently, his name will almost certainly be mentioned. Bryant is a true giant of the game, hailing from the suburbs of Lower Merion and going on to become one of the planet’s most prominent sports stars. His legacy is still felt today, with many players aiming to replicate his scoring ability and work ethic. Put, Kobe Bryant was an NBA legend.


Pete Maravich


While some of today’s players might be too young to remember Pete Maravich, some of the more senior members of the coaching staff might recall his immense ability on the court. Born in Aliquippa, Maravich was a consummate professional whose flashy play made him a big pull for fans of the sport. A true entertainer, Maravich’s skills and trickery helped to shape the sport we see today.



Earl Monroe


Earl Monroe, one of Philadelphia’s most respected former basketball professionals, had an excellent career in the NBA. The proud Philadelphian made the game easy, standing out with his playmaking and scoring ability. For any guards looking to perfect their game, watching some footage of Earl "The Pearl" Monroe is highly recommended. Overall, Earl Monroe was a joy to watch, having mastered his position on the court. His likable nature also made him a fan’s favorite at the time.


Wilt Chamberlain


Wilt Chamberlain is another example of greatness for any players on the Philadelphia 76ers roster, or even locals who aspire to reach the NBA. The icon from Philadelphia is one of the most successful basketball players we’ve ever seen. While he doesn’t always get mentioned by modern-day fans, a certain generation will always regard Chamberlain as the sport’s finest ever player. He had it all, from his physical prowess to his natural skill. As a result, he was an unstoppable force, winning two NBA championships, four NBA regular season MVP awards, and a Finals MVP award.


Kyle Lowry


We couldn’t leave out a current star of the 76ers, could we? While Kyle Lowry isn’t known around the world like Kobe Bryant and Wilt Chamberlain are, his career in the NBA has inspired many youngsters in and around Pennsylvania. A true leader on the court who sets the tone due to his passion and tenacity, Lowry leads from the front and is a key cog in the team’s wheel. If the 76ers are to come again, Kyle Lowry will undoubtedly need to be at the top of his game.


Special mention must include Richard Hamilton, Rasheed Wallace, Jack Twyman, and Jameer Nelson.
