If you’re planning to become a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), one of the first questions you might ask is: How many exams do I need to pass? The good news is that the RBT certification process is very clear, and there is only one main written exam you must pass. However, there are also a few other steps and assessments you need to complete before you're fully certified.
In this article, we’ll walk you through all the steps, explain what each part involves, and help you understand the full process of becoming an RBT.
An RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) is a trained professional who works directly with clients to help improve behavior and communication. RBTs usually work with children or adults who have autism or other developmental disabilities. They use behavior analysis techniques under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA).
Their work may include:
RBTs play a very important role in improving people’s lives, especially those with special needs.
Is There Just One Exam to Become an RBT?
Yes, there is only one official written exam you need to pass to get certified. However, there are two other major steps you must complete before you are allowed to take this exam:
Let’s take a deeper look at each of these steps.
Before anything else, you must complete a 40-hour training program based on the RBT Task List (2nd Edition). This course teaches you all the skills and knowledge needed to work as an RBT.
Step 2: Pass the RBT Competency Assessment
After completing your 40-hour training, your next step is to complete and pass the RBT Competency Assessment. This is a hands-on or practical evaluation.
A BCBA or BCaBA will observe your performance in real or role-played sessions.
They will check your ability to:
It’s not a written exam, but you must pass it to apply for the actual RBT exam.
This is the main and final exam. Once you pass your competency assessment, you can apply to take the RBT quizzes through the BACB (Behavior Analyst Certification Board).
The exam is taken at a Pearson VUE testing center or can sometimes be done online through remote proctoring.
You will get a pass or fail result right after the test. The exact passing score is not publicly shared by the BACB.
Once you pass the exam, you will be added to the BACB’s public RBT registry, and you’ll receive your official certification. From this point forward, you can begin working as an RBT under supervision.
You must keep your certification active by completing ongoing supervision and renewing your certification every year.
Becoming an RBT isn’t complicated, but it does require preparation and practice. Even though there’s only one written exam, the competency assessment is just as important. Each step builds your skills and makes you ready to work with clients effectively and ethically.
Take your time, study well, and practice your skills. Once you complete the process, you'll join a growing and respected field that makes a big difference in people's lives.
