The Montgomery Township Police will hand out the kits upon request until supplies last.
The Montgomery Township Police Department has received safety kits through Project ChildSafe, the nationwide firearms safety education program, which it will be distributing free of charge to residents.
The safety kits, which include a gun lock, are available at the township police station upon request and can be picked up while supplies last, police said.
Project ChildSafe is a nationwide firearms safety education program developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and supported by the firearms industry. Firearms owners who request a free safety kit will receive it “no questions asked.”
Police said if even one accident or death can be prevented through Project ChildSafe, the program will have been worth the effort.
"We encourage everyone who owns a firearm to store it when not in use in a location inaccessible to children or other unauthorized persons. Ammunition should be stored in a separate location. A key goal of the program is to prevent a loaded firearm from being left lying around the house where a child could pick it up and play with it," police said. "That’s a tragedy waiting to happen."
The firearms safety brochure that is included with the gun lock explains the importance of safe handling and secure firearms storage in the home, police said.
