The resignation follows months of rumors alleging utilities have pressed the Republican attorney general-elect to replace Patrick Cicero.
Following the resignation of Consumer Advocate Patrick Cicero, Senator Maria Collett released the following statement:
“The recent resignation of the state’s Consumer Advocate Patrick Cicero – a dedicated and tireless advocate for consumers – will undoubtedly leave Pennsylvanians who worry about the safety of their water or whether they can keep the heat on during these cold winter months, without a trusted liaison whose service to our Commonwealth has set the new standard by which all future Consumer Advocates will be judged.
The people of Pennsylvania deserve a Consumer Advocate who looks out for their safety and their bottom line. I call on Attorney General-Elect Sunday to appoint someone who has the character and fortitude to meet these needs.”
Cicero's role was to scrutinize the state’s water privatization process and utility rate hikes. He resigned after incoming Attorney General Dave Sunday said he would consider other candidates for the position.
Cicero’s resignation is effective Jan. 31.
