The Eagles — Like All NFL Teams — Can't Wear Alternate Uniforms in Playoffs

The Eagles wore alternate uniforms in each of their final two games of the regular season, but wouldn't be allowed to make it three games in a row for the postseason even if they wanted to.

After wearing their all-black uniforms in a Week 18 win over the New York Giants, the Eagles' X account has kept the profile picture with the team logo over a black background. That led to some speculation that they would wear the black-on-black threads against the Green Bay Packers in Sunday's Wild Card matchup. They will not

In fact, by rule, the Eagles would not be allowed to wear their black alternates or Kelly Green throwbacks in the postseason.

Baltimore Ravens fans are apparently upset that Lamar Jackson and company aren't wearing their popular black alternate unis against the Pittsburgh Steelers Saturday evening. But on the team's website, Ryan Mink explained why that is:

League rules state that teams cannot wear their alternate jerseys during the playoffs. In the game operations manual, it states, "Postseason uniform designation must include Primary Jersey color (team color or white) and Primary Pant color choices."

This means that the Eagles must wear their Midnight Green helmets for all postseason matchups, and then also have to wear either Midnight Green or white jerseys/pants. It kind of makes sense to have teams wearing their primary uniforms in the postseason, because for as fun as some alternate uniforms are, it would feel a bit gimmicky in the playoffs.

There's probably more of a case to be made for allowing alternate uniforms that are from the same era as the team's primary uniforms — like the black uniforms for the Eagles or Ravens — in the playoffs than throwback uniforms. For as popular as the Kelly Green uniforms are, they are an entirely different template than the Midnight Green, white and black jerseys. It would seem to undermine the current primary uniforms if you wore the Kelly Green throwbacks for a playoff game.

Obviously, there's a large contingent of fans who would be happy to altogether ditch the current uniforms and go back to Kelly Green on a full-time basis. But the Eagles have done a lot of winning during the Midnight Green Era, which started in 1996. The Midnight Green uniforms were created early in Jeffrey Lurie's ownership tenure, so it seems unlikely he'd sign off on putting them on the shelf. And above all else, the Eagles can make money right now selling both the primary Midnight Green uniforms and the Kelly Green throwbacks. That's the biggest reason they'll probably never return to Kelly Green on a full-time basis.
