On Wednesday morning, the predicted track of another storm system to reach the mid-Atlantic with snow and ice seems in doubt.

AccuWeather suggests the system will march through Virginia and go out to sea never to be seen again, but it could also take a turn up the coast and become a nor’easter, adding, “a disruptive snowstorm is possible this weekend.”

For the moment, the forecast is for an inch or two of snow starting Friday night and running into Saturday, with the snow falling intermittently. A turn up the coast would make it a significant winter weather event with the potential for heavy accumulations.

The National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, N.J., acknowledges a degree of uncertainty BUT believes the forecast modeling “has congealed more closely around the weak/southern low track with only a bit of light snow affecting our region.”

Cold conditions are forecast to linger through the end of the workweek with a biting wind, and Friday is likely to be the first day the mercury should spend several hours above freezing.

The automated equipment at Philadelphia International Airport shows the mercury did get above freezing for about two hours on Tuesday but before that the previous time was midday Saturday for a couple hours.

Reading Regional Airport was above freezing for one hour on Tuesday and before that, the previous time was Friday.

Lehigh Valley International was last above freezing on Friday.

Highs in southeastern Pennsylvania are expected to be in the mid-to-upper 30s in the passage of whatever form the storm system takes.

The area is not out of the woods, however, because it is January.

Morning snow is forecast for Tuesday, Jan.14, and intermittent afternoon snow for Thursday, Jan. 16, according to AccuWeather, with no totals yet associated with those events.

Plus, there’s an all-of-the-above wintry precipitation mix expected on the 19th.
