Fairmount Fire Co. firefighters, with assistance from Hatfield and Towamencin fire companies, were able to contain a tow truck fire from spreading to a nearby garage in an alleyway near West Second Street and North Cannon Avenue Saturday night, clearing the scene in about an hour.
At 11:08 p.m., the call came in to Montgomery County emergency dispatchers – a vehicle fire in the alleyway behind the 100 block of North Cannon Avenue, off the 700 block of West Second Street. Multiple calls followed, with reports of flames coming from the engine of a car and another caller saying the garage may be catching fire from it, with other nearby vehicles at risk.
“Initial 911 reports indicated there was a vehicle fire extending to a nearby garage. However, the fire was contained to one vehicle in the alley behind the 100 block of N. Cannon Avenue and no structures were involved,” said Fairmount Fire Chief Gavin Butler. “The fire was quickly extinguished and the fire company cleared the scene in about an hour.”
Butler said, as a precaution, Lansdale Electric was contacted to inspect overhead wires that were exposed to heat from the flames.
“The wires remained intact, and no power losses were reported while the fire company was on scene,” Butler said.
No injuries were reported.
Butler said the cause of the fire is not yet determined. The fire marshal’s office was notified, per normal procedure, he said.
Fairmount was assisted on scene by VMSC Emergency Medical Services.
