Considering Consuming Cannabis? Here's What You Need To Know

Cannabis has become a much more accepted drug in the last decade. Many states in the US and other countries all over the world have legalized it either partially or completely, and laws have relaxed considerably.

If cannabis consumption is legal where you live, you might have considered trying it, either for recreational purposes or for medical reasons, and while the prospect might be exciting, if you’ve never done it before, it can be quite daunting. With all the different strains and consumption methods available, it’s hard for beginners to know where to start.

Not to worry, though – this article is here to help you out. Here’s what you need to know to begin.

How Cannabis Works In The Body

Cannabis can have a wide range of effects in the body, from sedative to cerebral, and different strains fall in unique places on that spectrum.

The plant itself contains hundreds of chemical compounds, with the most well-known being THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). It’s THC that is responsible for the feeling of being high, but there’s also CBD (cannabidiol), and this is the compound that creates the sedative effect (those looking specifically for pain relief usually look for high-CBD strains).

Given such variability, it’s essential to research different strains carefully and select one that aligns with the type of experience you desire.

Methods of Consumption

There are several ways to consume cannabis. The most popular method is the traditional roll-up joint, where the flower is smoked and inhaled, and you can also inhale the smoke using a bong.

Edibles are another option. These take longer to metabolise in your body and usually kick in after an hour or so, and the psychoactive elements are usually stronger than smoking.

Dry herb vaping is considered the healthiest method, as there’s no actual combustion taking place when you inhale. Vapes also have better flavor profiles, and allow you to taste the subtle notes of the flower more compared to smoking or eating.

Risks and Side Effects

While people don’t die or become physically ill from cannabis consumption, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have any risks.

It’s relatively easy to become uncomfortably high if you’re not careful, and other symptoms from overdoing it, like dry mouth, dizziness, and altered judgement aren’t very nice to deal with. This can be mitigated by taking things slow and pacing yourself, but it’s important to be aware that you can take too much

The risk is particularly prevalent with edibles. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you haven’t felt the effects and take more, as it likely just hasn’t kicked in yet.

Wrapping Up

Hopefully, you’re now a little clearer on the basics surrounding cannabis consumption. The most important thing is that you take things very slowly and have the least amount possible for your first time, and always have someone to sit with you while you consume. While you’re unlikely to have any adverse effects, being with someone can greatly mitigate the unpleasantness if you do.

Providing you exercise necessary caution, you’ll be able to reap the benefits this wonderful plant has to offer. For more information, check out Leafy DOC cannabis education content.
