The Lansdale Historical Society wants residents to help set the script for its next community gathering under the stars.

The society’s “Old Time Movie Night in the Yard” premieres Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m. on the lawn of the historic Jenkins Homestead, and this time, the audience gets to choose the feature presentation.

Five silver screen classics are in the running: "The Thin Man," the 1934 whodunit brimming with Nick and Nora Charles’ witty banter; "Some Like It Hot," Billy Wilder’s screwball comedy capped with the unforgettable line “Well, nobody’s perfect”; "Casablanca," the timeless tale of love and loyalty during wartime; "The Time Machine," a journey into the far future of imagination; and "A Shot in the Dark," the slapstick mystery featuring Inspector Clouseau at his bumbling best.

Bring your own blanket, bring your own laughs

The event is free to attend, though donations are appreciated. Guests are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket, their own drinks, and snacks — perhaps even a batch of popcorn to share.

With choices ranging from mystery to romance to time travel, the evening promises a classic cinema experience against the backdrop of one of Lansdale’s oldest landmarks.

So whether you long for Humphrey Bogart’s smoky “Here’s looking at you, kid,” crave the comic chaos of Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis in high heels, or prefer to step through H.G. Wells’ invention into another world, the screen is yours to decide.

A winner will be announced ahead of the premiere. Until then, as Nick Charles might remind you, “The important thing is the rhythm” — and in Lansdale, it is the rhythm of community coming together for a night at the movies.

Lansdale Historical Society collects and preserves historical records and artifacts of the North Penn area and makes them available to the public through its library and museum. It is located at 137 Jenkins Ave., Lansdale.
