Montgomery County will host its annual Montco Farmers Gathering on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Fun-E Farm T.O.O., 3488 Church Road in Gilbertsville. The event is free to attend and open to all farmers, preserved farm owners, and individuals interested in the future of agriculture in Montgomery County.

Organized by the Montgomery County Planning Commission, the gathering provides a unique opportunity for farmers to network with peers and representatives from key agricultural support agencies, including the Montgomery County Conservation District, Horizon Farm Credit, Penn State Extension, and more. Attendees can expect updates on available grants, conservation programs, and agricultural resources.

A complimentary dinner and beverages will be provided, and a walking tour of Fun-E Farm T.O.O. will begin around 6 p.m. Guests are welcome to arrive and leave at any point during the event.

Focus on farmland preservation

A major topic of the gathering will be the Montgomery County Agricultural Land Preservation Program, also known as the farmland preservation program, according to the county Planning Commission. The initiative purchases agricultural easements from farm owners, ensuring that preserved land remains dedicated to agriculture in perpetuity. While landowners maintain full ownership and may sell the property in the future, any subsequent buyer must continue using the land for farming.

As of April 2025, the program has preserved 194 farms totaling 10,742 acres in Montgomery County. Statewide, Pennsylvania boasts over 6,400 preserved farms across 59 counties, accounting for more than 640,000 acres of protected farmland.

Funding for the program comes from multiple sources, according to MCPC:

  • Montgomery County Commissioners may allocate funds annually.
  • The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania contributes money through cigarette taxes, the Environmental Stewardship Fund, and other channels.
  • Municipalities can also contribute to preserve farms within their borders.

Participation in the program is voluntary, and interested landowners are encouraged to contact Stephen Zbyszinski at 610-278-5960 for more information on eligibility and the application process.

Those planning to attend the Montco Farmers Gathering must RSVP by August 10. Registration is available online via the county's website here.
