As we continue through a long election season, we thought it would be fun to showcase a few items from the MTHS Collections related to political campaigns.

The first one is a 61- page (!) pamphlet from 1869 containing a detail biography and list of accomplishments of General John White Geary, the incumbent Governor of Pennsylvania who was running for re-election, along with a brief intro to Henry C. Williams who was running for the PA Supreme Court.

Geary did win re-election but died at age 53, two weeks after completing his second term.

The second item is a letter from the Republican Committee in Norristown to registered voters endorsing Smedley Butler for Senate and Robert Anderson for Congress in 1932.

Both Smedley, a well-known military hero and former Congressman, and Anderson lost as FDR was elected in a landslide and swept many Democrats into office with him.
