The nonprofit holds more than $67 million in assets, but spends only $3 million annually, per Inquirer report

The Montgomery County, Pa. branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) was recently called out by the Philadelphia Inquirer as reports of its poor treatment of animals in its care with concerning levels of cruelty disclosed by multiple employees and volunteers.

In a full article by Max Marin, the Inquirer spelled out the accusations about the SPCA, which operates locations in Abington, Perkiomenville, and Conshohocken, including “chronic understaffing, squalid kennel conditions, and casual euthanasia” that had “become the norm, with little intervention from its executive director and nonprofit’s board.”

The names of the whistleblowers were not shared for their protection, but the article did disclose that the nonprofit currently had more than “$67 million in unrestricted investment accounts” as of the end of 2023, what Martin said is “more than double the assets of the second-wealthiest SPCA in the commonwealth,” implying that funding did not seem to be the issue.

However, the Montgomery County wing only spends on average about $3 million annually. For the full story on the alarming accusations, visit the story here.
