For the second time in five days, a two-car crash blocked traffic at Cannon and Columbia avenues in Lansdale Borough’s West Ward shortly after the start of school Thursday morning, making the intersection one of the more notoriously dangerous ones in town.

“Two?” replied a Columbia Avenue resident who did not wish to be named, when asked about the frequency of accidents on an annual basis at the intersection. “Try five to 10. Every year.”

Kathleen Allebach – whose front yard was the site of a near-miss crash when an SUV was propelled into her front railing and flowerbed after a crash Saturday afternoon – confirmed it was at least 10, on average.

Lansdale Police were dispatched at 9:09 a.m. for an accident with injuries at the intersection, with one passenger being transported with non life-threatening injuries via VMSC EMS to Grand View Hospital. A second patient, per Montgomery County dispatch, refused transport.

A gray Toyota and a white Hyundai were nose to nose at the intersection, the former sustaining severe passenger side front-end damage and the latter sustaining damage to its front left driver’s side.

Police said both vehicles were in opposing lanes on Cannon Avenue, when the driver of the Toyota turned left onto Columbia Avenue in the path of the Hyundai.

Cannon Avenue was closed between Derstine and Cannon avenues. The scene was cleared by 9:30 a.m.

“No one does 25 mph on this street,” said the Columbia Avenue resident. “Derstine has the 4-way stop and York has the school, so people use Columbia as a raceway.”
