The West Rockhill Board of Supervisors Wednesday, Oct. 16 received its annual update on the Pennridge Community Center.
Located at 146 E. Main St, the center offers a range of activities, programs and resources for seniors, including health screenings, tax preparation, insurance counseling, in-house lunches, educational forums, blood drives, library services and more.
Dave Nyman, chairman of the center’s advisory board, said that the bulk of the center’s funds come from local municipalities, fundraisers and rental payments from the legacy room. He thanked the board for approving in August an additional $10,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding for the center. The funding helped pay for a new refrigerator, said Nyman.
Board chairman Jay Keyser inquired about efforts to raise awareness of the center in the Pennridge community. Nyman suggested adding the center’s activities to the official West Rockhill calendar and including information in the township newsletter.
Nyman concluded by encouraging prospective members to visit the center. He said that membership is $20 per year but that anyone over 55 can access the center.
Holiday House pool funding request
The board tabled a request for a $6,500 advance on the Holiday House pool’s budget to purchase a new pump due to the absence of Supervisor David Collingwood. The Joint Recreation Authority (JRA), which manages the pool, has been pressing for the advance to ensure that the pump is installed in time for the next swim season.
The request comes just a few weeks before the November election, in which the township will seek the voters’ approval to borrow a maximum of $3 million to renovate the Holiday House pool in a ballot referendum. JRA vice chairman Don Crouthamel said that the JRA will hold an informational session at the West Rockhill Township building on October 30 at 7 p.m. to discuss the referendum and the JRA’s spending plans.
ARPA spending plans
The board continued its discussion on ARPA spending plans ahead of the December 31 deadline to allocate outstanding ARPA funds. West Rockhill directly received $546,478 in ARPA funds and has roughly $191,000 remaining
To date, the board has earmarked ARPA funds for the reconstruction of Old Mill Road, the refurbishment of the Heritage House at James Park, the purchase of new police radios and the Pennridge Community Center. The board is additionally exploring a fund to recruit and train volunteer firefighters.
Keyser said that the local fire companies will present a spending plan at the next board meeting. Schirmer also suggested the purchase of a speed sign to collect traffic data on local roads.
