A felony receiving stolen property charge was held for Montgomery County Common Pleas Court Wednesday against a Toms River, New Jersey man, who was found sleeping inside a stolen car out of Atlantic County NJ in the Walmart parking lot in Lower Salford Township earlier this month.

However, according to court documents, a request for a bench warrant was sent to Common Pleas Court for Steven P. George, 42, of the unit block of Key West Court. The defendant was free on $5,000 unsecured bail.

George was charged by Lower Salford Township Police with the felony in an Oct. 3 incident, per the affidavit of probable cause.

On Oct. 3, at 11:29 p.m., police responded to a wellbeing check for a report of a man slumped over the steering wheel inside a parked 2017 silver Ford Fusion in the parking lot of the 651 Main Street store, police said.

While en route, police were advised that the vehicle’s registration came back as a stolen vehicle out of Hamilton Police Department in Atlantic County, NJ, per the complaint. Upon arrival, police located the car and confirmed it was the stolen vehicle, police said.

George, who police allege was the one in the vehicle, was woken up, and police determined he was merely asleep and did not suffer a medical emergency, per the affidavit.

A formal arraignment in the county court is set for Dec. 4 at 9:30 a.m.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
