The field will be constructed on the old ninth grade football field off Lower Road and the main high school entrance.
The Souderton Area School Board Thursday, Sept. 26 approved the construction of a multi-purpose turf field on the high school campus.
The field will be constructed on the old ninth grade football field off Lower Road and the main high school entrance. It will consist of a full-size varsity baseball field with lines for regulation soccer, field hockey and lacrosse in the outfield.
The field will provide an on-site location for the high school varsity baseball team, who currently practice and play off-site at the Harleysville Baseball complex’s dirt field. The team has argued that the field’s conditions are among the worst in the region.
“We have a flat pigeon mound because our home plate is actually lower than the surface of playing field,” said Dave Wisnowski, president of the Souderton High School Field of Dreams Baseball Booster Club. “We have one of the worst, if not the worst field in the Suburban One District.”
In addition, the varsity softball field will also be turfed. Both fields will receive LED lighting systems as well as zero-foot candle lighting at the property line.
The $3.9 million project will be financed through the district’s capital fund. Construction is anticipated to run from October 2024 to March 2025, with the field being available for use in the spring.
