Emergency crews are at a scene in Lower Salford for the report of a gas leak, which has at least 100 apartments evacuated at this time.

According to the county’s emergency dispatch, a call was received around 2:59 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon for the reports of a possible gas leak in Lower Salford Township in the vicinity of Main Street and Kulp Road.

The area is a community called Village Square Apartments. Its residents have been evacuated, as that is where the construction work was underway.

Early reports stated that a construction crew in the area struck a gas line, and that a “strong odor of gas” could be smelled in the area. An evacuation plan was put into place, as emergency crews reached out to PECO to close off the line.

Called to the scene were rescue units from Hatfield Volunteer Fire Company, Towamencin Volunteer Fire Company, Upper Salford Volunteer Fire Company, Harleysville Fire Company, and the Montgomery County Haz-Mat Response Team, among other first responders.

Main Street is closed from Broad Street to Kulp Road in Harleysville. PECO is on the scene to assist.

More information will be provided as it is made available.
