A Montgomery Township man accused of assault for running over a Lansdale man the afternoon of Oct. 30 has been charged again by Lansdale Police for a hit-and-run that occurred 20 minutes prior.
Alexander Maxwell Handschu, 38, 1600 block North Line Street, faces charges of misdemeanor accidents involving damage to an attended vehicle and numerous summary offenses including failure to stop and render aid, reckless driving, careless driving, driving with a suspended license, and driving an unregistered vehicle, police said.
On Oct. 30, at 11:50 a.m., police responded to the 900 block of Walnut Street for a report of a hit-and-run accident, which began in on North Broad Street in Hatfield Township.
Police said the driver was on the 1800 block of North Broad Street, when he was sideswiped by a white pickup truck with a white cap on the bed with doors on the back, driven by Handschu. The driver followed Handschu, and saw him pull into the Wawa parking lot at 1900 N. Broad St. Police said the driver pulled into the Rite Aid across the street to see where he would go.
Police said Handschu drove through the lot before turning left onto Cowpath Road, and then right onto North Broad Street. The victim followed Handschu south on Broad Street to West Ninth Street to Walnut Street, police said.
Handschu stopped abruptly in the roadway on the 900 block of Walnut Street, causing the victim to slam on his brakes, police said. Then, Handschu allegedly backed his truck into the victim’s car, pushing it into the curb.
The victim’s car sustained serious damage to its front end. Handschu left the scene, north on Walnut Street, before turning right onto Hatfield Street, police said.
Police matched the license plate to Handschu, per the affidavit. Then, at 12:12 p.m., Handschu allegedly ran over a Lansdale man sitting on a couch in a yard on West Seventh Street.
Handschu remains at Montgomery County jail on $99,077 cash bail, which includes a parole/probation detainer, according to court records.
According to Pennsylvania court records, Handschu has been criminally charged nine separate times since June 2020, which includes one active criminal case at the Bucks County Court of Common Pleas from an August 2024 arrest.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
