In a case involving an assault on a North Wales Borough Police officer, a felony charge of aggravated assault was withdrawn against a Lansdale man at a Thursday preliminary hearing.

Joshua Allen Wright, 41, will be arraigned in county court in January on misdemeanor charges of simple assault, obstruction of justice, and resisting arrest, as well as summary offenses of public drunkenness and disorderly conduct, according to court records.

On Nov. 4 at 6:40 p.m., police responded to a report of an altercation on the 300 block of South Main Street in North Wales Borough. Upon arrival, police found a man yelling and screaming, as well as signs of a struggle in the kitchen, including food knocked out of a frying pan, police said.

Police found Wright in a bedroom, and he was allegedly heavily intoxicated with a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, had glassy eyes, slurred speech and was unsteady on his feet, police said.

When asked for his ID, Wright became agitated, repeatedly pointing at an officer and saying, “I will f--- him up,” per the affidavit. Officers attempted to calm him down, but he pointed at a second officer and threatened to beat them up too, police said.

At 7:14 p.m., Wright allegedly hit an officer with his left hand, and then steadied his body in a fight stance, per the complaint. He kept repeatedly yelling, “I’ll f--- you up p----!” at police, according to the report.

Additional officers arrived to help arrest Wright, but he allegedly continued resisting arrest, which required a substantial force by multiple officers to get him under control. As police attempted to place the last handcuff on Wright’s wrist, he pulled away and attempted to use the weight of his body to avoid being handcuffed, police said.

“It took substantial force to place Wright into handcuffs. (He) continued his resistance by pulling in different directions as we were walking him to a nearby patrol car,” police wrote in the affidavit. “(Wright) was also yelling and shouting profanities outside.”

After being secured in the back of a patrol car, Wright began banging his head off of the prisoner cage repeatedly, police said. Thus, police had to restrain him to prevent him injuring himself until arrival of VMSC EMS, per the report.

Wright was removed from the patrol car and seated on a stretcher for transportation to Lansdale Hospital, police said. After he was on the stretcher, police removed the handcuffs, upon which time Wright allegedly began thrusting his body upwards and away from the stretcher, per the complaint.

It took more than five officers to restrain Wright and secure him to the stretcher, police said.

Wright remains in Montgomery County jail on $10,000 cash bail and awaits a Jan. 8, 2025 formal arraignment.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
