A family of four and one firefighter were taken to Lansdale Hospital Tuesday night for precautionary evaluations due to effects from an overwhelming chemical odor that evacuated homes around Amy Court in Montgomery Township.

Fire Department of Montgomery Township Chief Bill Wiegman said the cause of the odor was from cleaning solution from powerwashing that occurred earlier in the day in the townhome complex.

Residents along Georges Court and Joshua Court were affected by the odor as well.

“We believe that the atmospheric conditions slowed the evaporation of the solution’s odor,” Wiegman said. “We advised residents to seek alternative housing should the odor be too strong for them to tolerate.”

Wiegman said fire crews checked the area for the odor and the Montgomery County HAZMAT Team also assisted in the search.

VMSC EMS, Colmar Fire Co., and North Penn Vol. Fire Co. assisted at the scene. Wiegman said FDMT offered to connect residents with the American Red Cross, if needed.

Authorities did speak with the power washing company and the president of the Homeowner’s Association.
