Man accused of trying to use stolen debit card at Hot Topic, police say

A Philadelphia man allegedly had a bag of stolen credit cards and unsuccessfully tried to use one to buy earrings at Hot Topic in Montgomery Mall, Montgomery Township Police said.

William Omar Towels, 23, of the 1000 block of S 55th St, has been charged with felony counts of criminal attempted forgery, attempted identity theft and possessing credit cards belonging to anther person, according to charging documents.

Towels has also been charged with misdemeanor charges of attempted use of an access device without permission and marijuana possession, police said.

 On Nov. 1, at 1:35 p.m., police responded to the mall for a report of a suspicious person who was in possession of a bag full of credit cards that could possibly be stolen, per the affidavit.

Upon arrival, mall security pointed out Towels, who told police he found a wallet and attempted to use the credit and debit cards to buy items from Hot Topic, police said. Towels showed police the numerous cards belonging to someone else and said he did not know the person whose name was on the cards, police said.

A store employee told police Towels was unable to use a Citizens Bank card to buy earrings, as he was unable to enter a PIN number, per the affidavit.

After being taken into custody, police found a white plastic bottle with a small amount of marijuana, police said.

Towels remains at Montgomery County jail on $2,500 cash bail, per court records. A preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 3 at 11:45 a.m. before Magisterial District Judge Andrea Duffy.
