Sellersville Elementary School recently hosted its annual “Exercise for Education” event, the school’s largest fundraiser.
During the event, students spend the day outside exploring new ways to be active. Local businesses specializing in youth sports and fitness host stations for the students to be exposed to new ways to move and be healthy.
Caitlin Ehrmann, a Sellersville parent and member of the Sellersville Elementary PTU, said Exercise for Education was born from the reflection of parents who wanted to work with the building staff to think of new ways to engage students in a variety of activities beyond just running.
“The students remain at each station for 15-20 minutes and then move to another one,” said Ehrmann. “This is a great way for students to learn if there’s an activity or sport they find interesting but it is also beneficial to the businesses hosting stations because it provides them with exposure and opportunities to promote themselves. Of course, the kids still enjoy a popsicle at the end.”
Some other highlights of the event include the large number of local businesses who come together with the Sellersville area community to support the kids and make this event possible. One is a Sellersville Elementary alumnus who returned as the owner of a local Volleyball Academy to teach the next generation.
There are also many high school students from the Unified Track team teaching third-graders how to throw a javelin. The Sellersville PTU works with the school staff to plan fun activities for our school families and helps pay for field trips, teacher appreciation opportunities and classroom and recess supplies.
