Telford Borough Council Joins Hometown Heroes Banner Program

Charles Smith as an 18-year-old Marine is honored on a Hometown Heroes banner in Hatfield Township.

The faces of local veterans will soon be showcased throughout Telford Borough, with the Telford Borough Council officially joining the Hometown Heroes Banner program.

The program honors service members with banners displayed throughout their respective municipalities from the beginning of May to Veteran’s Day. The banners include the veteran’s photograph as well as their full name, military branch and era of service.

Eligible veterans must have had a connection to Telford Borough at some point in their lives. Interested parties must fill out a form and submit a photograph of the veteran in uniform and a $175 payment.

Council member John Taylor said that the project will likely begin on Penn Avenue before branching out to Main Street and Washington Ave. He also noted that the banners of the armed services will be displayed in the Telford Train Station parking lot. Borough manager Kyle Detweiler added that the parks map on the borough website will feature the locations of the banners.

Grant for Park

Council approved an application for a Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) open space grant to help finance the acquisition of the ‘Telford Borough Pocket Park’ on the Trinity UCC church land parcel purchased last year. Detweiler said that the borough is aiming to recoup approximately half of the acquisition costs and will receive a response later in the year.

In his report, council member Robert Sparks said that the public safety committee discussed a potential parking ban inside the loop on Grandview Drive to facilitate traffic flow. Police Chief Randy Floyd requested that the affected residents be notified in advance to provide an opportunity for feedback. Detweiler responded that any ordinance will be publicly advertised to solicit public input.

In her report, Michelle Kane, the board’s liaison to the Indian Valley Public Library, revealed that library director Margie Stern is proceeding with her pre-planned retirement this year, with interviews for a replacement currently underway. She also highlighted the Souderton Area School District’s month-long art exhibit at the library, with an art reception scheduled for March 15 at 5:30 p.m. She added that the library will be distributing solar eclipse glasses on March 25 ahead of the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8.

In his report, Taylor listed some upcoming Telford Happenings, Inc. events, including an Easter Egg Hunt on March 23 at 10 a.m. in Centennial Park, the So You Think You Can Cook cooking competition on April 3 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Perseverance Fire Company, an Earth Day event on April 22 and the beginning of the Telford Night Market on May 29.

In addition, State Rep. Steve Malagari presented citations to retiring Telford Borough Police detective Daniel Fox and retiring Telford Borough Authority superintendent Daniel Wurst on behalf of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives.

The next Telford Borough Council meeting is on April 8 at 7:30 p.m. For more information, visit telfordborough.org.
