A Philadelphia couple is facing charges of felony retail theft, receiving stolen property and conspiracy to commit retail theft for stealing almost $700 worth of groceries from Wegmans on three occasions in May, authorities allege in an affidavit.
Jordan Lee Hurey, 36, of the 1200 block of S 60th Street, and Christy Anne Cummings, of the 8000 block of Revere Street, have been accused by Montgomery Township Police with committing the thefts on May 1 and May 11, 2024, according to the affidavit.
Police were called to Wegmans at 804 Bethlehem Pike on May 13 at 5:47 p.m. for a late report of two retail thefts involving two suspects, identified as Hurey and Cummings, police said.
On May 1, a white male, identified as Hurey, wearing a black T-shirt, black shorts and white New Balance sneakers, and a white female, identified as Cummings, wearing a black hoodie, black pants, and black Nike sneakers, and a black backpack, entered the Wegmans from the café entrance at 3:44 p.m., per the complaint. Cummings, police allege, went to the restroom for 11 minutes, as Hurey ordered a sandwich and two drinks. Police said Hurey selected a reusable bag and hid the drinks and sandwiches in it, and then went to the restroom.
At 3:55 p.m., both Hurey and Cummings met in the produce section and selected another reusable bag, police said. They went to the Health & Wellness section, where Cummings pointed to items as Hurey concealed them in the bag, police allege.
The stolen merchandise included Wegmans reusable freezer bags, five boxes of Nexium 42-count capsules, two boxes of Nexium 24-hour tablets, and nine boxes of Prilosec OTC tablets, totaling $397.82, police said.
The couple then left the store without paying, police said, and fled on foot toward Smoky Bones’ entrance of the mall, police said.
Then, on May 11, the couple returned to Wegmans to commit another theft, authorities allege.
Hurey, wearing a black Adidas hoodie, gray sweatpants and white New Balance sneakers, and Cummings, wearing a gray Nike hoodie, black sweatpants, black Nike sneakers, and a backpack, were seen sitting in the outside café area at 2:49 p.m., according to the affidavit.
At 3 p.m., Hurey got up and walked toward the Smoky Bones entrance of the mall, returning at 3:13 p.m. wearing a face mask and carrying a black bag, police said.
Hurey then entered Wegmans via the front entrance at 3:15 p.m. and removed his mask. He then selected a reusable Wegamans bag and began taking unpaid merchandise from the shelves and hiding it in the bag, police said.
Hurey then heads toward the exit without paying at 3:29 p.m., police said.
As viewed on surveillance video, as Hurey heads inside, Cummings entered the store from the café entrance at 3:07 p.m., according to the complaint, and she too selected a reusable Wegmans bag and places it in a cart.
Cummings then proceeded to take merchandise and placed it in the cart, concealing some of it in the reusable bag, police allege. She then took the bag from the cart, leaving the remaining items in it, and leaving the store via the café exit, police said.
Cummings then meets Hurey outside Wegmans and they both run off the property toward the back of the mall, police said.
During the May 11 incidents, Hurey stole, police allege, Wegmans reusable freezer bags, three boxes of Nexium tablets, and three boxes of Prilosec tablets, totaling $106.93.
Cummings, police allege, stole a Wegmans reusable paper bag, two boxes of Nexium 24-hour capsules and six boxes of Prilosec tablets, totaling $193.91.
Wegmans loss prevention pressed charges against Cummings and Hurey, who were arrested during a third alleged theft incident at Wegmans on May 20, where they were each charged with felony retail theft and felony receiving stolen property.
Hurey is free on $1,000 unsecured bail on the May 20 arrest, set by Magisterial District Judge Michael P. Quinn at arraignment. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Hurey for July 16 at noon before Magisterial District Judge Andrea Duffy, while Cummings's hearing is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. Court records had no details on Cummings's bail or arraignment.
A summons was issued June 21 for the May 1 offenses for both defendants, who have a preliminary hearing together on Aug. 6 at 10:45 a.m. before District Judge Andrea Duffy in that case, per court records.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
