Crews are currently at the scene of a blown transformer and electrical fire on Fretz Road near the intersection with Allentown Road in Towamencin Township.
First responders were dispatched to the scene at 5:59 p.m. for a report of an electrical fire outside. North Penn Now photographer Jimmy James, who was enroute to cover a road obstruction in Harleysville, observed flashes in the sky and drove to the scene. Upon arrival, our photographer was able to record the transformer exploding prior to the arrival of emergency response personnel.
County dispatch reported a building fire at that same location a short time later, however James said he hasn’t observed any indication of a fire at the home. The wire remains live on scene as of 6:24 p.m., and James said there is a tree currently on the power line.
Fretz Road is closed in the area as Towamencin Police and crews from Towamencin and Hatfield fire companies work to secure the scene.
The incident is one of many live incidents across the North Penn and Indian Valley regions Tuesday evening, as a major storm brings heavy rains and winds across the area. Other active incidents include a tree down across Lansdale Avenue near Cowpath Road in Montgomery Township and an electrical fire outside near the intersection of Sumneytown and Dekalb pikes in Upper Gwynedd Township.
Residents are strongly encouraged to stay indoors and avoid driving until the storm has passed. The National Weather Service has also issued a flood warning for the area from 5:58 p.m. through midnight, along with a wind advisory through 3 a.m. Wednesday.
