Man Arrested While Attempting to Cash Fraudulent Check While Standing in Drive Through of Bank, Police Say

A Philadelphia man was arrested earlier this month while attempting to cash a fraudulent check at a bank in Montgomeryville, and was later found to be in possession of crack cocaine, according to police.

Patrick Doyle Jr., 45, has been charged with two felony counts of forgery, as well as misdemeanor counts of access device fraud, possessing an instrument of crime, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is currently free on $5,000 unsecured bail.

Montgomery Township Police were dispatched to the Fulton Bank along the 700 block of Upper State Road on Feb. 7 at 3:27 p.m. for a report of a man attempting to cash a $1,991.16 fraudulent check while standing in the drive through line. Arriving police located the man still standing in the drive through line, and when asked for his identification, he said the bank had it inside, according to police.

A pat-down of the man — later identified as Doyle — allegedly revealed a large bulge in the cargo pocket on his right leg, and when asked what it was, Doyle said, "My drugs,” police said. When asked if he knew where he was, Doyle allegedly told police he was in Allentown, adding that he had received the check for doing contracting in Lebanon, Pa. and was on his way to Reading, according to the criminal complaint.

Investigators said the business whose name was on the check confirmed the check number did not exist and they did not issue a check to Doyle, police said. Doyle was subsequently taken into custody, at which point police recovered multiple plastic vials containing crack cocaine and a glass pipe, the report states.

Doyle was arraigned that evening, and his next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Feb. 27 at 9:45 a.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge Andrea Duffy.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
