An Allentown man is facing charges after he was arrested after attempting to steal $570 worth of energy drinks and sodas from the Wegmans at the Montgomery Mall.
Montgomery Township Police were dispatched to the store on Feb. 1 for a report of a retail theft in progress. Police were advised two men were actively loading Red Bull, Monster Energy, and sodas into their cart and were observed exiting the store without paying, according to charging documents.
Arriving police
made contact with the two men as they were loading the stolen items into the
bed of their truck, at which point they were taken into custody, police said.
One suspect, identified as 35-year-old Darrell Broadwater, was charged with
felony counts of retail theft and receiving stolen property.
The criminal complaint notes the second suspect was also charged, however their name is being withheld by this news organization as court records do not show any charges being filed and there is no record of them being arraigned on any charges.
Investigators said Broadwater had five prior retail theft convictions, leading to his charges being upgraded to the felony level. He’s currently being held at the county jail on a probation detainer.
Broadwater’s next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Feb. 13 at 10 a.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge Andrea Duffy.
The name of the second suspect will be added to this article if charges are officially filed.
All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
