With a rendition of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” Souderton residents summoned Santa Claus to light the borough’s Christmas tree.
“The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear,” said Souderton Mayor Dan Yocum.
Hundreds braved the freezing temperatures Friday evening to attend the borough’s annual tree lighting ceremony, featuring a towering artificial tree adorned with colorful lights and twinkling ornaments.
“We really live in a hallmark town,” said Yocum. “Look at this tree. It’s incredible, and it’s a great way to kick off the holiday season.”
Sponsored by Univest, the ceremony was held in the Univest courtyard for the second consecutive year. The courtyard is the precise location of the inaugural Souderton tree lighting 101 years ago.
As the ceremony got underway, Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived on a firetruck to great fanfare, with children racing over to get a glimpse of the couple before lining up for pictures.
Rounding out the event was live Christmas music from the Souderton Area High School advanced choir, Christmas-flavored ice cream from Downtown Scoop and hot chocolate from Good Will Canteen.
