Make your list, check it twice — and stop by downtown Lansdale on Friday night. Borough officials gave a preview Wednesday night of the start of the town’s holiday season, with the annual tree lighting in Railroad Plaza at Main and Madison streets slated for Dec. 6.
“Friday night is the tree lighting ceremony, I hope you’re out there by 6:30 p.m. I think people will start to congregate about 6 o’clock in Railroad Plaza,” said council President Mary Fuller.
Kids can drop their letters to Santa at the Santa House located between Railroad Plaza and the nearby SEPTA station, and the man in red himself will arrive in a Fairmount Fire Company firetruck around 6:30 p.m. to help light the tree, then hear kids’ wish lists. Weather permitting, Santa will also stop by from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Dec. 13 and 20 and 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 21.
The Friday night tree ceremony will also kick off another winter wonder: the town’s annual Christmas Tree Display will be held at 307 Derstine Avenue, the former home of The Reporter, and will be open until 8 p.m. on Dec. 6, then three nights a week through December.
“The Christmas Tree display, over at the old Reporter building, also opens this weekend. We’ll be open Thursday, Friday and Saturdays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. through the beginning of January, so come see decorated trees and vote for your favorite,” Fuller said.
The town’s annual Menorah lighting will also be held at Railroad Plaza, slated for 6 p.m. on Dec. 26, and will feature free food, crafts, and music by the ‘Horns of Hanukkah’ as community members mark that holiday. Councilwoman Meg Currie Teoh added that the Fairmount Fire Company will host their annual Santa run, bringing the man in red throughout the town, starting at 4 p.m. on Dec. 21, along “the same route Santa has used in the past.”
