A Norristown man with a revoked concealed carry permit has been accused of carrying a loaded firearm without a license and drug offenses after he consented to a search of his vehicle at a traffic stop.

During the search, Montgomery Township Police said a 9mm handgun with a bullet in the chamber was found in the trunk, along with 50 rounds of ammunition.

Amir Tyrek Wylie, 23, of the 600 block of Calamia Drive, was charged Aug. 8 with felony carrying a firearm without a license, and misdemeanor offenses of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, vandalism of a prison cell, and improper window tinting, according to court documents.

On Aug. 8 at 1:12 a.m., police were on patrol in the area of Dekalb and Bethlehem pikes when a maroon 2005 Ford Taurus sedan with heavily-tinted windows traveling southbound on Dekalb Pike, police said.

A traffic stop was conducted near Dekalb Pike and Welsh Road. Police approached the passenger side, and made contact with Wylie, who was driving the car, police allege.

Police smelled the odor of marijuana in the car, and asked Wylie if there was marijuana in the car, police said, to which Wylie pointed at the ashtray and recovered a joint. He asked if he had a medical marijuana card, and he said he did not, police said.

Wylie gave consent to search is car, police said.

During the search, police found a small blue plastic baggie labeled “305” with a picture of a man in Joker makeup and a gun in his hand, police said, in the center console.

In the trunk, police found a black backpack that contained the loaded 9mm Taurus handgun with a loaded magazine and a round in the chamber, per the affidavit. There were also three additional magazines in the backpack, totaling 50 rounds from all three, police said.

Police said Wylie had a revoked conceal carry permit from the Philadelphia County Sheriff’s Office in December 2023. He admitted that his permit was revoked and he was unable to file for an appeal based on his work schedule, police said.

While in lockup at Montgomery Township Police Department, Wylie was seen on surveillance camera concealing a movement to the right side of his body, police said. He was removed from the cell and the word “F---” was carved into the bench by his finger, per the complaint.

Wylie remains free on $25,000 unsecured bail, according to court documents. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 10 at 10:15 a.m. before Magisterial District Judge Andrea Duffy.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
