One of our readers recently asked if a list exists of all the stores in Montgomery Mall in Montgomery Township on the day it opened. We were able to search the digitized copies of The Reporter on newspapers.com, and we found an article listing the stores.

What an amazing variety! The mall was truly the ideal place for one-stop shopping. We had forgotten about some of the stores, such as Woolworth’s, CVS, Roy Rogers and two big booksellers, Walden and B. Dalton.

Saturday, February 26, 1977 was the date of the grand opening of the mall. Local celebrities Captain Noah and Al Alberts were on hand for the 10am ribbon cutting. The mall opened with two major department stores, Wanamaker’s and J. C. Penney. Bamberger's and Sears were added later.

Enjoy these photos from a time when shopping was a social event.
