Local comedian Buddy Harris is set to record his inaugural comedy special at Newtown Theatre this Saturday.
The show will take place Saturday starting at 8:30 p.m.
Harris, who co-owns the Lansdale Tavern and Healthy Shack with his fiance, Julie Palermo, isn’t a stranger to the Newtown Borough stage. He has previously performed at the theater and is excited about his return for this special show.
“I like the Newtown Theater,” he said. “I’ve done that a few times, and I’ve always had a great time. That town is cool.”
Promotional material for the event provides a glimpse into Harris’ comedic approach: “Buddy dissects his life onstage and nothing is off limits, from divorce to cancer to being a father of three daughters. You’ll find his energetic style of storytelling about modern day family to be both relatable and funny.”
The comedian’s journey into the world of stand-up began in a rather unexpected way at the age of 35. Following a playful bet with his oldest daughter, Harris mustered the courage to step onto the stage for the very first time.
Harris described himself as a “weird, awkward kid” who had a “little bit of anxiety in public” growing up.
“I could see my defects in my kids already and I was like ‘this is bad,'” he said. “And so I made a deal with her: if she got on stage and did her school play, I would just go do an open mic.”
Since that bet a decade ago, Harris has showcased his comedic talent in clubs and casinos nationwide.
Harris recalled being “obsessed” with comedy from a young age.
“To go into comedy was a dream of mine,” he revealed in an interview with NewtownPANow.com.
A cherished memory for Harris is watching an HBO comedy special with his “stoic” father, who broke into laughter during the show. The moment resonated deeply with the young Harris.
“I remember thinking, ‘wow, this is powerful,'” he said.
Over the years, his passion led him to binge stand-up specials from video stores.
Harris said his desire is to reflect on life in his routines, and he always aims to leave his audience laughing.
