Constitution Day was celebrated Monday, Sept. 18, on the steps of Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown by Towamencin Chapters of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and Children of the American Revolution (CAR).
In attendance were state Rep. Steve Malagari and Justin Bayer, President of the Montgomery Bar Association, among others. County and state officials including Governor Josh Shapiro conveyed greetings and proclamations to mark the occasion.
Sadie Zavada, CAR chapter president, helped to open the ceremony by leading the Pledge of Allegiance and later rang a bell in unison with the Court House bell at 4 p.m. for “Bells Across America,” at which time Towamencin and 3,000 other DAR chapters rang bells to observe the 236th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution.
The national DAR initiated the observance in 1955, when the service organization petitioned the U.S. Congress to dedicate Sept. 17 through Sept. 23 of each year to the commemoration of Constitution Week. Congress adopted the resolution, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into law in 1956.
