A Spring City man is facing multiple felony charges after he allegedly took $15,000 to build a deck outside of a home in Hatfield Township then failed to complete the project.
Christopher Langvin, 32, has been charged with felony counts of deceptive business practices, theft by deception, receiving stolen property, making false statements to induce agreement for home improvement services, and receiving advanced payment and failing to perform, following an investigation by the Hatfield Township Police Department.
Langevin is currently free on $10,000 unsecured bail.
Police said they were contacted by a family living on Miller Place on June 2 who reported they had agreed to a $22,200 contract to have Langevin build a deck at their home and provided him with $15,000 to begin construction, however the project was never completed. Investigators said the project was to begin on March 31 and end on or before April 14, but no work had been performed.
On May 2, Langevin advised the victims that he had suffered a back injury, and along with a lack of personnel for the project, he was forfeiting the opportunity to complete the contract, police said. He instead came up with a repayment schedule of three equal payments over a six-week period, but no payments were made, and he then ceased communications with the victims, according to charging documents.
Investigators said Langevin returned $2,054.04 of materials to Home Depot in May and another $2,000 of materials in July, leaving the balance owed to the victims at $10,945.96.
Police spoke with Langevin in June, at which time he advised he was “down on his luck” and had suffered a herniated disk in his back approximately two weeks after he signed the contract to build the deck, according to police.
Charges were filed against Langevin on July 28, and he was arrested and arraigned on Sept. 13. His next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Oct. 31 at noon in front of Magisterial District Judge Andrea Duffy.
