Something reeks in Lansdale.
Residents near the White’s Road Park pump station were curious Wednesday night and Thursday morning as to the source of a pungent, sewage-like stench blanketing the borough.
This was not the typical Hatfield Quality Meats rendering plant odor that normally envelops the Hatfield, Towamencin, and Lansdale regions.
“The borough is aware of odor coming from White’s Road Park pump station and we are currently looking into the cause of the smell. We appreciate your patience as we look to address the odor cause and avoid the issue moving forward,” stated Lansdale Borough in a news flash alert on its website Thursday.
While no update was provided by Lansdale as of Friday morning, and Public Works Director Chris Kunkel did not return an email by press time, the culprit could possibly be a mix of the borough’s new eco-friendly ultraviolet disinfection sewage treatment technique that eliminates the need for chlorine amplified by the current heat wave and associated humidity.
“The advanced disinfection technology that we are implementing uses electricity to achieve disinfection rather than harmful chemicals,” plant Superintendent Gregory Rapp told Lansdale Patch in June.
“As we move forward, we will continue to explore and expand our green energy opportunities and advancements in wastewater treatment technology to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions and our facility’s overall carbon footprint.”
The new treatment procedure, per Rapp, involves switching sewage processing tanks twice, which could cause foul odors exacerbated by the heat in the summer.
Lansdale officials are working to address any instances of foul odors as swiftly as possible, and asked for patience during the project, which, in its completion, should limit damage to our local environment.
