Tex Mex Connection Donates $7,500 to North Wales Borough for Assistance with 5K Race for Open Space

An annual fundraiser has, once again, made a difference for North Wales.

The Tex Mex Connection restaurant and owner Jane Keyes have made a $5,000 donation to North Wales Borough, and a $2,500 donation to the town’s police department, as thanks for the town’s help with the restaurant’s annual 5K Race for Open Space.

"We’re very blessed to live in a community like this. We really are,” Keyes said. "There aren’t many of these little towns left.”

Each year the Walnut Street-based restaurant holds a summer walk and run that draws thousands of runners to town, and the 33rd edition of the race was held on June 21; Keyes has repeatedly made donations from the proceeds to the borough’s police department and/or for green-related purposes.

"It’s a green race, for a green restaurant, and I know the money gets used for green causes in the borough,” she said.

On Oct. 10 came the first: council President Sal Amato read a resolution formally accepting a donation in the amount of $2,500 from Tex Mex to the police department, which police Chief Dave Erenius said will go toward their community policing budget, and likely used for public "Trunk or Treat” events and giveaway items from police for those who attend town events.

"We appreciate everything you’ve done, the donations you’ve made in the past to the borough. It’s very…” Amato said, and councilwoman Wendy McClure finished the sentence: "Fabulous.”

"We appreciate you very much, you and all of the employees of Tex Mex that do this,” Amato said.

Borough Manager Christine Hart added her own thanks, on behalf of staff and Erenius: "The Chief and I appreciate working with such a class-A business owner, and business staff. We can always count on you, as much as you can count on us,” and Keyes replied, "Right back at you.”

A similar motion accepting a $5,000 donation from Tex Mex to the borough itself "for green initiatives” was listed on council’s meeting agenda for Oct. 24. Borough council next meets at 7 p.m. on Nov. 14 at the borough municipal building, 300 School Street; for more information visit www.NorthWalesBorough.org.
