Homeless Man Arrested After Falling Asleep in Stolen Delivery Truck on Bethlehem Pike, Police Say

A homeless man is in custody at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility after he allegedly stole a delivery truck and then fell asleep behind the wheel on Bethlehem Pike in Montgomeryville.

Jamie Ramos, 36, has been charged with felony counts of theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property, as well as misdemeanor counts of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and false identification to law enforcement, in connection with the Oct. 21 incident. He’s currently being held on $10,000 cash bail.

Montgomery Township Police were dispatched to the area of Bethlehem Pike and the Route 202 Parkway at 1:43 p.m. for a report of a reckless driver. County dispatch relayed that a male driver in a Penske truck kept falling asleep at the wheel and at one point was stopped in the middle of the road.

Police initiated a traffic stop of the truck near the Airport Square Shopping Center and made contact with the driver, identified as Ramos, according to the criminal complaint. Ramos initially provided a false ID to police, who added they believed Ramos was having some sort of medical emergency due to his behavior and disoriented manner, police said.

Ramos declined medical treatment, however he spoke with two doctors via phone, according to police.

It was later determined that the vehicle had been stolen from a location in Philadelphia earlier that day, and Ramos was subsequently taken into custody.

His next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on Nov. 14 at 10 a.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge Andrea Duffy.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using court records and the affidavit of probable cause.
